Hi there,
I want to update you on something deeply concerning that just came out of Washington.
Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has authorized the Department of Homeland Security to use Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst—right here in New Jersey—as an immigrant detention center.
The base isn’t housing migrants yet, but it could in the coming weeks or months. And if Trump gets his way, it will.
This is an outrageous abuse of military resources. I served as a physician at that base. It exists to protect our country and prepare our service members—not to carry out Trump’s radical immigration agenda.
We’ve seen what these detention centers look like under Trump: inhumane conditions, due process violations, and children ripped from their families. That’s not what our military should be used for. It’s shameful.
Alongside Senators Booker and Kim and many of my colleagues in the New Jersey delegation, I condemned this decision in the strongest possible terms. And I’m working in Congress to ensure our base is used for military readiness—not political stunts.
We need your help to keep fighting back against this, and I hope I can count on you to stay involved.
Thank you for standing up for what’s right. I’ll never stop fighting for our values.
And if you want to support my work in Congress, I’d be honored if you chipped in to my campaign.
Sincerely,
Dr. Herb Conaway
