Dear members and supporters,
We are in hard times. The erosion of our democracy and the threats to our families, friends, and loved ones are rocking our feelings of safety and normalcy to their core.
At Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, we are listening to, learning from, and building a stronger we with grassroots organizations and people of color inside and outside of our alliance.
The inspiration, education, and ability to make meaning of this moment by artists and culture workers around the globe bolster our programs and mental health.
One group of artists — who believe as radical, Black feminist filmmaker and activist Toni Cade Bambara did — that the role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible, are holding the BlackStar Film Festival next week in Philadelphia to support modern day changemakers and movement
builders.
This year, we are partnering with BlackStar to host a screening of a new documentary that explores the intersections of climate crisis, militarism, and building a new economy by director Sammy Baloji entitled The Tree of Authenticity (L’arbre de l’authenticité).
This film traces the impacts of colonialism in the Democratic Republic of Congo on both people and nature, and explores the carbon-absorbing role of the Congo Basin as climate change continues to unravel our planet.
The Tree of Authenticity (L’arbre de l’authenticité) Saturday, August, 2 at 11:00 AM ET Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center 300 South Broad Street, Philadelphia
If you are in Philadelphia, you can join the festival and this screening in person. If you are not local, some films are available online — be sure to check those out! |
