I know receiving an email like this while you’re getting ready for the weekend — and probably thinking about anything other than politics — isn’t likely to brighten your day. And to be completely honest, I wish I didn’t have to send you this email either.

But with KS-03 set to be one of the most competitive districts in the country once again, it’s necessary.

The simple fact is, since I’m the only federally elected Democrat in our state, Kansas Republicans think I don’t belong in Congress. They see me as an outsider, a roadblock to their disturbingly extreme agenda.

And they’re not lying. At least not in this case.

I am an outsider in Congress, and proud of it. I’m one of just a handful of Democrats in Congress who represents a red state. And I know for a fact that there aren’t many people with backgrounds like mine in Washington — people who were raised by a single mom and paid their own way through college.

And yes. I’m a roadblock to their agenda too. Because if a party that has explicitly called for banning abortion and restricting same-sex marriage rights in Kansas wants to kick me out of office, that means I’m doing something right.

Listen, it’s no secret that I, as a Kansas Democrat and an LGBTQ+ Native American woman, truly stand out in Congress. And even though that makes the Kansas GOP extremely angry, I’m not going to change anything about myself.
