Dear Neighbors,

As we move through the legislative interim, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to spend time in the community to listen, learn, and connect with neighbors about the issues that matter most. These moments are why I got into public service, and I look forward to continuing these conversations as we work together to shape a legislative agenda that truly reflects the needs and values of our district.

At a time when the federal government is failing, I’m committed to doing everything I can to ensure Minnesota picks up the slack. Here are some highlights in the community!

Rondo Days

It was a joy to join neighbors, friends, and colleagues at this year’s Rondo Days celebration! I had the chance to connect with community members, catch up with old friends and colleagues, and hear directly from constituents about their hopes and concerns. We spoke with members of the Research Steering Committee (RSC) about their ongoing survey efforts and had important conversations about the challenges of delivering social services in today’s tough political climate.

It was also great to hear from the new Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Stanley, who spoke about the district’s upcoming referendum.

Thank you to Congresswoman Betty McCollum for inviting me to join her team for the day, and thank you to everyone who stopped by to share their stories.

Ujamaa Place Summer Fest

Ujamaa Place hosted their inaugural Summer Fest, an inspiring celebration of their transformative work and deep connection to community. Through their evidence-based "Theory of Transformation", Ujamaa Place has empowered and uplifted the lives of more than 6,000 young African American men.

Despite frustrating recent funding cuts, the team continues to lead with resilience, optimism, and an unwavering commitment to their mission. I had the opportunity to speak with the Interim Executive Director and the Program Director, who shared powerful stories about the organization’s impact.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this vital work and to the Ujamaa Place team for all they do to build stronger, more just communities.

CAAL Powertalk

We are living through a time marked by profound violence and loss, both in our communities and in our personal lives. Like so many others, I continue to grieve the recent assassination of our friends Melissa and Mark Hortman, whose death has left a deep sense of sorrow and unease.

This month’s Powertalk, hosted by the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL), created a much-needed space for collective mourning, reflection, and healing. Together, we honored our shared histories, explored pathways to justice, and leaned on traditional healing practices. Resources were shared around immigration and deportation, Ethnic Studies, and community-based healing.

I’m grateful for the time spent in community with others who are walking the same path—seeking healing, solidarity, and hope.

Fighting for Gender Equality

The Minneapolis Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) brought people together in a powerful show of unity, celebration, and advocacy for gender equality, reproductive rights, and the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in Minnesota (ERAMN).

The event featured a special screening of "Zurawski v. Texas", a harrowing documentary that lays bare the stark reality of being pregnant in a state where abortion is banned. The film highlights the courage and resilience of those who have chosen to speak out in the face of injustice.

"Zurawski v. Texas" is on Prime, Netflix, and Apple TV starting August 1. I’m grateful to AAUW and all who continue to fight for dignity, safety, and equality for all.
