Friends — Massachusetts is undoubtedly the birthplace of American public education.

America’s first public school and America’s first college, Harvard, were both founded in Massachusetts. The first public high school was founded in Boston in 1821.

And since then, Massachusetts has remained a leader in strong public schools. Our schools rank among the best in the country with some of the best outcomes for students, and it’s a big part of what makes Massachusetts a great place to work, raise a family, and lead a successful life.

But now, Trump’s administration is taking the most anti-education stance we’ve ever seen in the White House. In just six months, Trump has:

• Gutted the Department of Education
• Cut access to free or reduced school meals
• Made it harder for low-income students to get Pell Grants and pay off student loans
• Slashed funding for critical education research
• Froze funding for after-school programs, teacher training, services for English language learners, and more
• Launched direct legal attacks on institutions such as Harvard and Columbia as political retaliation

These decisions have been devastating to public education in America. Ed Markey is committed to leading the fight against them.

It’s going to take time and a long-term strategy to not only undo the damage done by Trump, but actually improve our education system so that every child in every community can get a quality education from pre-school to college or trade school that prepares them for a prosperous future.
