Seventeen years ago, I completed my final treatment for breast cancer.
I was fortunate: I had access to advanced screenings and treatments that helped save my life.
But fortune shouldn’t determine one’s ability to get life-saving cancer treatments. I want to make sure every American has affordable access to care.
That’s why I’m proud to join colleagues in sponsoring the SCREENS for Cancer Act of 2025, which will expand breast and cervical cancer screening and treatment for those who lack access to these important services.
Surviving breast cancer made me realize I couldn’t put off the things I was passionate about, and it made me reevaluate the impact that I could make on the world with whatever time I was privileged enough to have.
Part of that impact is removing barriers that prevent too many women — especially those in underserved communities — from getting the screenings that could save their lives.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. One of every 43 women will succumb to the disease. But we know early discovery reduces the likelihood of overcoming cancer. And this simple fix could significantly improve the outcomes for millions.
As the first woman ever elected to serve CA-30, I’m honored to fight every day to open more opportunities for all women – in their careers, their economic mobility, and especially in their healthcare.
