Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act: A Message from Governor Abbott

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law signed on July 26, 1990, by President George H. W. Bush. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. From employment and education to transportation and public accommodations, the ADA has transformed our communities, ensuring people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

In Governor Abbott’s proclamation he expressed, “Over the past three and a half decades, the ADA has advanced inclusion efforts like accessible transportation, inclusive education, and employment protections, which has contributed significantly to greater independence and a flourishing society.”
