Your Latest Briefing from the Liberal Democrats. | | In this cost-of-living crisis, high energy bills are not only impacting people’s wallets, leaving many struggling to make ends meet - they’re also holding back the economy.
That’s why, this month, Ed Davey revealed our new policy to halve energy bills over the next decade.
While Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch tout the fairytale myth that renewable energy is to blame, we’re making the case for green energy and offering real solutions.
With renewables now cheaper than fossil fuels, we must break the link between electricity prices and gas, by moving old projects onto fairer Contracts for Difference, as well as investing in insulation, interconnectors, and more clean energy. | | Our liberal vision for growth, outlined by Ed, also includes:
🔶 Supporting free trade by championing a closer trading relationship with Europe and standing up against Trump’s trade war.
🔶 Backing small and growing businesses, entrepreneurs and the self-employed - key drivers of growth and innovation.
🔶 Boosting education and training to give people and our economy the skills for the future. | | ⏲️ Watch time: 57 mins / Est. reading time: 23 mins | Do you want to help make our liberal vision for growth a reality? We’ve been collectively appalled at the Israeli Government's abhorrent aid blockade - with food being used as a weapon of war - and the reports of indiscriminate attacks against Gazans seeking life-saving supplies.
The Liberal Democrats have been the leading party in Parliament pushing the Government to apply more pressure on Netanyahu’s Cabinet.
This includes Ed Davey’s recent Prime Minister’s Question calling on Keir Starmer to sanction Netanyahu himself, as well as calling for a full ban on military exports to Israel.
This week, Ed also urged Keir Starmer to recognise the independent state of Palestine to take the lead on securing a two-state solution.
Liberal Democrats want to see a ceasefire agreed immediately. That’s the only way to move towards a permanent peace which provides dignity for Palestinians and Israelis. | | ⏲️ Est. reading time: 3 mins | | | After years of Lib Dem pressure, the Government has finally agreed to scrap Ofwat, the weak water regulator.
This comes after a 60% rise in serious sewage spills last year, with water companies polluting rivers while handing out massive bonuses and dividends, and charging you higher bills.
We’ve been calling for a tougher regulator since 2022. Scrapping Ofwat is a big win, but the fight isn’t over.
The Government wants to halve the number of times sewage is discharged into waterways by 2030 - this is simply not good enough. We must end all sewage dumping in bathing waters by 2030, to protect swimmers and the environment.
Help us keep up the pressure on the Government by sharing our goal with your friends and family: | | | We won’t rest until water companies are properly held to account and our rivers are protected for good. | | | Votes at 16 | We’re delighted that 16 and 17 year olds will now have the chance to vote in UK General Elections.
With 16 and 17 year olds already being able to pay taxes and serve in the Armed Forces, it’s a no-brainer. It’s worked wonders in Scotland and Wales to engage young people politically.
We’ve campaigned for this reform for well over twenty years, but there are many more battles to be won to strengthen our democracy.
The Government must close the door to foreign oligarchs who wish to interfere in British politics and elections, such as Elon Musk.
It’s also time the Government introduced fair votes via proportional representation. | | | | Protecting our media from foreign interference | This week, the Liberal Democrats put forward a motion in the House of Lords to block plans allowing foreign states to buy large stakes in UK newspapers.
Despite backing from 155 peers across all parties, the motion was defeated — meaning the cap on foreign ownership will rise to 15%. This threatens press freedom and opens the door to influence from hostile states.
There are also concerns that multiple foreign states could ally to stack their 15% stakes together to gain even more control. After Lib Dem pressure, the Government has now promised new rules this autumn to stop that from happening, but it leaves open a dangerous window of opportunity in the meantime.
In the months ahead, we’ll continue to pressure the Government to keep our media free from foreign interference. | | ⏲️ Est. reading time: 3 mins | | | Work for Us | We’ve got a wide variety of vacancies - both paid and voluntary - currently available.
