The Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States created a “law-free zone” around the presidency. It handed presidents – current or former – criminal immunity for actions tied to their official duties, even if those actions are illegal.
It’s a ruling that defies the Constitution, the rule of law, and centuries of American democracy.

This amendment is clear:
- No officer of the United States, including the president, is above the law
- Presidents cannot claim immunity just because they were performing “official duties”
- Presidents cannot pardon themselves
It would reverse a ruling that invites a federal executive “unbound by the constraints of the rule of law,” as Rep. Morelle put it. It would ensure that criminal prosecutions can’t be blocked simply because the person breaking the law held high office. And it would close any loophole that lets a president use official power to shield subordinates from accountability.
We’ve already seen what Trump does when he believes he can act with impunity – and the Roberts Court just made that even easier.
