Laura Beth Slitt: Just a Chicken to Some, but Stasi Was My Friend

To the editor:

I had the distinct pleasure, over the last 10ish years, of caretaking Stasi, a Silver Laced Wyandotte. She was a treasure who left a hole in my aching heart when she died Wednesday, July 9.

We spent long hours together as she followed me around the yard, going where I went, accompanying me as I sat on the front porch, and even, on occasion, sitting on the back of my driver's seat on short trips.

She taught me all the sounds chickens make when they talk, sounds that I will cherish hearing and miss listening to. From short, muffled notes like that of a muted trumpet to purrs of happiness in her room, a large dog crate she enjoyed high atop a table in the house. Then there were her elongated shrills, perched on her spot, when I was headed to the fridge, reminding me to bring her a treat. She loved pasta, blueberries, grapes, sunflower seeds, pieces of whole grain bread, cooked corn, and even hummus!

Just a chicken to some, but my connection to everything Godly in non-human beings who teach me humility and to care deeply about others suffering and why it matters.

I miss you, Stasi. I look for you and visit all your spots around here where I found you after calling for you and finding you dust bathing under the trees.

Just a chicken to some, but my friend, my reminder that animals are special, teachers, and guides to help us evolve to the humane society we should be.

Where are you, my little feathered and much-loved friend?
