Last night in New York, some incredible candidates proved that our progressive fight is a movement not to be taken lightly.
My fellow Brand New Congress candidate Jamaal Bowman, principal, activist, and progressive fighter, seems to have won his primary against incumbent Representative Eliot Engel. I congratulate him and celebrate him for fighting for his community — and winning.
Also in the Bronx, Ritchie Torres, who stands to be the first openly gay Black Congressman, also seems to be beating Rev. Ruben Diaz, a right-wing “Democrat” with a homophobic past. Lawyer and activist Mondaire Jones, a progressive champion, appears to be joining Torres as the first openly gay Black Congressman, beating out his corporate-funded opponents.
This is all to say — real, tangible progressive change is not only possible, but it’s coming to Washington. And I couldn’t be more excited to join Jamaal, Ritchie, and Mondaire in Congress. We need to show the Democratic establishment that a new wave of progressive leadership is coming, and it’s powered by the people.
