We’ve been awarded gold for Armed Forces support!
Oldham Council is proud to have been given the Gold Award for supporting the Armed Forces – the highest award a civilian employer can receive.
We support veterans, reservists and military families in Oldham by offering:
- Guaranteed job interviews for veterans, reservists and cadets if they meet the job requirements
- 10 extra days of paid leave for reservists to attend annual training
- Time off for Cadet Force Adult Volunteers to help with their duties
- Free access for veterans to five local gyms and leisure centres for two months, with discounts after that
We are also marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a special public event on Friday 15 August at 6pm in Oldham town centre. There will be a two-minute silence and wreath laying to remember those who served in the Far East during the Second World War.
On the same day, veterans can enjoy a free breakfast at selected cafés and restaurants in the town centre – a small thank you for their service.
Oldham Council will keep supporting those who serve and encourages other employers to do the same. Find out more [here]([link removed])

Oldham’s New Town Centre Park to be Named ‘Tommyfield Park’
Oldham Council is proud to announce that the town’s new five-acre park will be called Tommyfield Park, in tribute to the historic Tommyfield Market.
The market, which has been part of Oldham’s life for over 200 years, is closing as part of the town centre’s regeneration plans. The name comes from local farmland once owned by a man named Tommy, and the market became famous in 1860 as the first place in Britain to sell fried chips – sparking the nation’s love of fish and chips.
Tommyfield Park will be a green, family-friendly space with:
- Solar-powered lighting
- Wildlife-friendly planting
- Open lawns and paths
- A strong focus on sustainability
