As so many of us are beginning to awaken to and figure out how to confront the systemic anti-Black racism in policing, education, health care, and jobs, we at Caring Across Generations see the urgent need to fight anti-Black racism within the care sector. As caregivers, people with disabilities, and seniors we are firm in our belief that no one is disposable and that our societal and governmental institutions and policies should reflect that belief. Only when Black people in this country and within our care system can live free from racism and discrimination, will we all thrive.

For those of us who care about care, we know our current care infrastructure is deeply inequitable. To build a care infrastructure that honors the human dignity of all people of every race, class, age, ability, gender, gender identity, and sexuality, we must deepen our understanding of systems of oppression (the root of these inequities). This means intentionally working to dismantle white supremacy, having a deep anti-racism analysis, being aware of our personal bias and privilege, and centering equity and inclusion in our work and our mission.

Alongside one of our partner organizations, Hand in Hand: Domestic Employers Network, we invite you to our first Anti-Racism 101 training happening this Thursday at 7 pm Eastern/4 pm Pacific. This training will be the first in a series of events and trainings we are holding for us all to learn and change together.

Together we will explore what we have been taught about anti-Black racism, examine how we uphold and/or confront it in our everyday lives, and dive into how it manifests throughout institutions and broader society. Because we also know conversations aren’t enough, Caring Across will share actions we can take together to demand a care system that centers racial equity and serves the most marginalized.

We invite everyone, no matter your level of comfort or experience discussing this topic, to the conversation. There are no right or wrong answers, but we ask for your commitment to be transformed in the service of the work — our care system and our country depend on it.

This training is open to all Caring Across Generations supporters, but will be tailored to white and non-Black people of color.
