👋 Hi John! Happy Thursday. We made it to the end of the week!
We are happy to bring you The People’s Bi-Weekly Watchdog Newsletter, delivered to your inbox every other Thursday. This week, we want to explain why Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump’s agreement on redistricting is very, very wrong for the people.
This week’s newsletter is just a 3 minute read at 550 words.
Trump and Greg Abbott are wrong. So are Beto, AOC and Gavin Newsom.
For more than a week now, various politicians have been in open war when it comes to anti-democracy attacks.
Right now, at the pressure of Donald Trump, Texas is attempting to redraw Congressional district lines mid-decade. Their stated goal is clear — draw more partisan Republican districts. In response, Beto O’Rourke, Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have claimed Democrats should fire back, gerrymandering in states they can. All of these folks are wrong. All of it is anti-democratic.
Common Cause has proven in California, Michigan, Colorado, and Arizona that people-first districts are a better way to support ourselves and our communities. This race to the bottom only rewards special interests. And frankly, it’s not a fair race – Republicans control more state legislatures and more of the maps.
So instead of fighting a losing game that divides us, we need to stand up and make it clear – all of these folks are wrong.
We're working so hard to protect our democracy, we could write you a novel instead of a newsletter. Instead, here are the top headlines you don't want to miss:
