Why the Attorney General Race Deserves Your

Full Attention

Greetings,

I want to begin this week with a sincere apology for an oversight in last week’s communication. I mistakenly referred to “Medicare” throughout the message when I intended to reference “Medicaid.” I regret any confusion this may have caused regarding the potential impact of the Big Beautiful Bill on Medicaid funding.

As with many of my recent newsletters, this week’s focus is once again on the upcoming election. While the Governor’s race is understandably drawing significant attention, I urge you not to overlook other critical positions on the ballot. Chief among them is the office of Attorney General—a role that, while sometimes underappreciated, holds tremendous influence over Virginia’s legal and policy direction. The Attorney General serves as the Commonwealth’s chief prosecutor and represents Virginians in legal matters. That is why the AG race deserves thoughtful consideration from every voter.

One of the core responsibilities of the Attorney General is ensuring public safety. Unfortunately, the Democratic nominee, Jay Jones, has demonstrated a troubling record on this front, both as a legislator and during his time as a prosecutor in Washington, D.C. He has repeatedly opposed tough-on-crime policies that would have made our communities safer. By contrast, Attorney General Jason Miyares has led with strength and clarity. His leadership on Operation Ceasefire has directly contributed to reducing gun violence and improving safety in neighborhoods across Virginia. Miyares understands that law and order are essential to a strong, prosperous society, and the results of his efforts speak for themselves.

Public safety is just one area of concern. Jones has also consistently supported policies that favor illegal immigrants over law-abiding Virginians. In 2020, he voted for SB 935, which granted in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants at Virginia colleges and universities. Two years earlier, he voted against HB 1257, which would have prohibited sanctuary cities in Virginia. He has publicly criticized ICE and supports measures that would obstruct the lawful deportation of individuals who are in the country illegally. These actions point to a pattern of prioritizing non-citizens over the interests of the very people he seeks to represent.

The role of Attorney General also involves defending Virginia from federal overreach and ensuring that our state, not other states, controls our laws and policies. Attorney General Miyares took a stand for Virginia’s sovereignty by successfully challenging the electric vehicle mandate tied to California’s emissions standards. This mandate would have empowered California regulators, not Virginians, to dictate what vehicles could be sold in our state. Thanks to Miyares’ legal efforts, those decisions now remain where they should, with Virginia lawmakers and citizens.

Not only has he successfully sued California to return regulatory power to the people of Virginia, but he also took on Big Pharma to secure justice for families affected by the opioid crisis. As a result of this lawsuit, Virginia will receive up to $103.8 million over the next 15 years. These funds will be invested in local prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts, helping communities rebuild and save lives. This is a huge win for Virginians and a clear example of what a strong, effective Attorney General can accomplish. His willingness to stand up to powerful interests and deliver real results is exactly the kind of leadership we need.

Lastly, we must consider how other candidates would use the powers of this office. Jason Miyares’ opponent has signaled a willingness to politicize the Attorney General’s office to pursue partisan objectives. We have already seen how Democrats across the country have used the legal system as a tool to target President Trump. If elected, Jay Jones is likely to follow that same path, focusing on political retribution rather than protecting the rights and safety of Virginians.

Now more than ever, Virginia needs an Attorney General who is committed to public safety, the rule of law, and defending the rights of all citizens.
