Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates     Law Enforcement News Funeral to be held for LAPD sergeant killed in 405 Freeway crash A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday for a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant who died last month after being struck on the 405 Freeway. Sergeant Shiou Deng, 53, and 34-year-old motorist Jesus Garcia were both killed in the incident on June 23 in Bel Air. Sergeant Deng's funeral service is set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Forest Lawn - Covina Hills Mausoleum in Covina. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is expected to attend. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers initially responded to a single-vehicle crash on the southbound 405 Freeway just north of Moraga Drive, where a Toyota pickup truck was found disabled in the HOV and No. 1 lanes. Sergeant Deng arrived in his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated and stopped behind the Toyota to assist. As Sergeant Deng exited his vehicle, a Nissan sedan, driven by Mario Bickham, struck the patrol vehicle and then hit Sergeant Deng. Jesus Garcia, the driver of the Toyota, was also struck while standing outside his vehicle and died at the scene. Sergeant Deng was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, where he was pronounced dead. FOX 11 Waiting shooter ambushed 2 Ohio officers parked for lunch, also wounded another responding officer An armed man lying in wait on a dead-end street shot and wounded two Ohio police officers when they parked their patrol vehicles in an undeveloped industrial park to eat lunch Wednesday, and an officer driving into the scene in response to their call for help also was shot and seriously injured, officials said. The shooter “was shot on scene and was pronounced deceased,” said Michael Failing, the acting police chief in Lorain, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Cleveland. The man “had an arsenal of weapons with him,” said Failing, who did not share further details on that and noted that the available information about the shooting was preliminary. James Welsh, the police chief in nearby Elyria whose department is investigating what happened, told reporters earlier that Lorain officers were ambushed by a man firing a high-powered rifle, and that police returned fire. Welsh said it wasn’t immediately clear if the suspect, a 28-year-old Lorain man whom Welsh and Failing did not name, was killed by the officers or shot himself. Welsh said the man is believed to have acted alone. Two of the officers suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Failing said. They were in critical condition after being flown to a trauma center, according to a statement issued by the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police hours after the shooting. The other officer was shot in the hand and was treated at a local medical facility, Failing said. Authorities said the man was crossing outside of a crosswalk. The driver did not stop to identify themselves or offer help, continuing southbound on Lankershim Boulevard, police said. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the bicyclist to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was described as a 52-year-old white male. His name is being withheld pending family notification by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the driver, under the city’s Hit-and-Run reward program. Investigators said the victim was lucky to be alive after determining the shooter had fired multiple rounds during the incident. The suspect fled the scene in their vehicle after the incident. NBC 4 LA City Attorney's Office targets alleged illegal nightclub in downtown The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office announced its plan to target an alleged illegal downtown nightclub where a deadly shooting happened two years ago. The city said the property at 217 East Washington Boulevard has been operating as an illegal, after-hours nightclub since December 2017. Before turning into a nightclub, the City Attorney's office said the property was an illegal marijuana dispensary and illegal gambling operation. Despite repeated warnings, the owners and operators have continued to host parties, concerts, and even sell nitrous-oxide-filled balloons, according to the City Attorney's Office. "The Defendants have repeatedly and brazenly violated laws and jeopardized the well-being of our community. Ensuring public safety of our residents is a top priority, and with this suit, we are holding the property owners accountable and putting a stop to illegal activities that have continually disrupted this neighborhood," City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto said. In addition to the disruptive parties and music, the City Attorney's Office said the property has been the site of violence for many years, most notably a deadly shooting in June 2023. CBS 2 Suspect in Paramount immigration raid assault arrested at US-Mexico border The man who was caught on video throwing rocks at federal agents last month in Paramount has been arrested, authorities said. The FBI said Elpidio Reyna, 39, of Compton was taken into custody Wednesday morning at the U.S.-Mexican border after negotiating his surrender. Reyna reportedly fled to Mexico after the alleged assault on June 7, which was right when the immigration raids began in Los Angeles. He's accused of injuring a federal official while damaging law enforcement vehicles on Alondra Boulevard. The publicity led to Reyna's arrest in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. After agreeing to surrender, Reyna was arrested by FBI agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego County. Reyna was taken to Los Angeles, where he was due to appear before a U.S. magistrate on Wednesday. ABC 7 Bryan Kohberger sentenced to life in prison for murdering 4 Idaho students Bryan Kohberger, the masked man who sneaked into a rental home near the University of Idaho campus and stabbed four students to death in late 2022, faced the families of his victims in court Wednesday before he was sentenced to life in prison. Whether those families will get any answers about why he did it or how he came to target the home on King Road in Moscow remains to be seen. But Kohberger, 30, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves and Ethan Chapin in the rural college town of Moscow. He pleaded guilty earlier this month in a deal to avoid the death penalty. He has an opportunity to speak at the sentencing — as do the loved ones of his victims. Here’s what to know about Kohberger’s sentencing. Mogen, Kernodle, Goncalves and Chapin were found stabbed to death on Nov. 13, 2022. The crime horrified the city, which hadn’t seen a homicide in about five years, and prompted a massive hunt for the perpetrator. Kohberger, a graduate student in criminology at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania, where his parents lived, roughly six weeks later.
