What is Head Start?Since 1965, Head Start has served as a lifeline for children and families from under-served communities, providing high-quality early education, nutritious meals and comprehensive health services that set the foundation for lifelong success.
What makes Head Start so powerful?Head Start isn't just preschool. It's a comprehensive program that addresses the whole child and their family. Head Start ensures children from under-served communities have an equal opportunity to develop the skills they need to succeed. The program helps level the playing field, giving children the foundation to enter kindergarten ready to learn alongside their peers.
Why should I be paying attention to Head Start now?Head Start operates in every ZIP code across America. In many rural and under-served communities, it's often the only reliable childcare option families have. But the program faces serious threats: delayed funding, stalled approvals, and a proposed FY26 budget that includes flat funding, which, with inflation, means devastating cuts.


Without increased support, programs will be forced to cut enrollment, reduce hours, or lay off staff. Vulnerable families could lose access to essential services, and parents may be forced to leave the workforce due to limited child care options.


The next generation depends on Head Start. And Head Start depends on all of us to fight for the resources our children and families deserve.
