“2 still missing in Texas floods after body of woman found in Kerrville, Greg Abbott says,” Houston Chronicle's Jarrod Wardwell — “The body of a woman who was missing in the devastating July 4 floods has been found, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.
Abbott said Task Force 1 — one of the search teams deployed in response — recovered the body in the Kerrville area. He announced the discovery in a post on X at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday.
Three people remained missing after the flood, leading up to Tuesday night, according to Kerr County officials. The recent finding would presumably lower that number to two.
A man and a little girl from Camp Mystic were still missing, Abbott said. He last said the death toll stood at 135.
"Our search continues," he wrote.
Floodwaters had surged in the early morning hours of July 4 after rainfall overloaded the Guadalupe River and inundated parts of the Texas Hill Country. The Guadaulupe River rose 20 feet in about 95 minutes and topped the streambed by 40 feet in some places, leaving little time for those sleeping nearby to escape.
The ensuing flood wiped out riverside camps, RV parks and homes. The most lives were lost in Kerr County, where at least 37 children and 70 adults died in the flooding.
Kerr County was home to summer camps like Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls that has been described as heaven on earth. The camp has confirmed 27 campers and counselors were killed in the flooding, and one child there remains missing. The camp's owner died trying to save the young campers from tragedy.
