John—
White supremacy and misogyny are alive and well. That’s not a secret; it’s plain to see. Our country was founded on oppression and a rigid social and political hierarchy to preserve white male privilege. The result of not dismantling this system has been generations of pain, suffering, and inequality for Black people, immigrants, and women.
Less known, however, is the foundational role that the anti-choice movement played in perpetuating these injustices. Which is why I wrote The Lie That Binds — to reveal the truth behind the origins of the Radical Right, including how it weaponized abortion as a way to advance its racist, misogynist agenda. The Lie That Binds unravels the web of characters responsible for the rise of the anti-choice movement:
People like [Paul] Weyrich and [Jerry] Falwell have always drawn political benefit from stoking racial animus to sow cultural discord. This cynical exploitation never stopped, but efforts became more coded in the 1970s as the successes of the Civil Rights Movement showed quickly growing public support for at least the theory of racial equality. So, when the movement architects saw [Phyllis] Schlafly’s accomplishments, they understood a ripe opportunity to add gender concerns to their efforts to defend the preservation of white patriarchal systems of control, or as they called it, “the natural family.”

Revealing the history of the Radical Right — and its ties not just to anti-choice policies, but to white supremacy — is crucial in the fight for racial justice and reproductive freedom.
Though its leaders attempt to claim the moral high ground, the anti-choice movement has been tied to white supremacy from the very beginning. The Radical Right was formed to fight school desegregation — it only pivoted to abortion when public opinion started to turn against its blatant racism.
Pre-order The Lie That Binds to discover more about how racism and misogyny are deeply entwined with the origins of the Radical Right — because truth is still our greatest weapon in the fight for our fundamental freedoms.
If Trump’s presidency has proven anything, it’s that willful ignorance is deadly, to be sure. But the truth can only be ignored for so long. We are the true majority. And with an understanding of the racist history of the anti-choice movement, we are better equipped to fight back. Pre-order your copy of The Lie That Binds today.
