News from Representative Himes

Dear Friend,

It’s been a tough start to summer. President Trump and Congressional Republicans rammed through a budget that will force 17 million people off their health insurance, raise the national debt, and give the ultra-wealthy a generous tax cut. Last week, they slashed funding for public broadcasting programs like NPR and Sesame Street, and eliminated lifesaving foreign aid programs. While the current climate in Washington is challenging, I am restored by spending time at home in Connecticut with groups and organizations which do wonderful work. Read on to see a few of the initiatives I was fortunate to visit over the last few weeks.

Juneteenth:

I joined celebrations in Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk, and Greenwich this year to mark Juneteenth, a federal holiday which commemorates the day in 1865 that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas. It has been a joy to see this holiday dedicated to liberty grow and to celebrate alongside the Black community here in Fairfield County.

Service Academy Nominations:

At the beginning of June, I hosted a reception for the high school students I had the privilege of nominating to attend one of our nation’s military academies. In all, Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District will send 20 of our own to U.S. Military Academies, spanning all four branches of the armed forces and the Merchant Marine Corps. They are all tremendous credits to their families, schools, and hometowns and, as a nation, we owe them a debt of gratitude. Good luck to you all!

Prospector Popcorn:

To further its mission of providing people with disabilities meaningful employment opportunities, Ridgefield’s Prospector Theatre recently established Prospector Popcorn, a gourmet popcorn distributor. I toured the business’ food production facility to learn more about the employees’ experiences and hear from the organization’s leadership about their plans to enter new markets. Plus, I got to sample a bit of the product and have to say the popcorn was fantastic. Thank you all for having me!

Pride Month:

Sexual orientation or gender identity should never serve as the basis for discrimination, harassment, or hate—full stop. No matter who you love or how you live, you are cherished and welcomed in this country. From Darien to Bridgeport to Ridgefield, Southwest Connecticut turned out to show support for the LGBTQ+ community this Pride Month.
