Brain-Swelling Virus Claims Life: Experts Urge Urgent Warning |
United States: Health officials are raising serious concern after the first US death this year from West Nile virus—a mosquito-borne illness that’s quietly gaining ground as temperatures rise nationwide.
The victim, an older adult in Maricopa County, Arizona, had existing medical conditions and was among the rare 1% of infected people who develop the virus’s most dangerous form. In such severe cases, the virus slips past the brain’s natural defenses and invades the central nervous system, triggering swelling in the brain or spinal cord. This can result in life-altering conditions like encephalitis, meningitis, or even paralysis.
