 Dear Friend,
Water is an everyday essential. Whether you’re drinking, showering, cooking, or brushing your teeth, you use water every single day. Every Michigander deserves access to safe drinking water. Here’s what we’re doing to make sure it is clean:
- We launched the MI Clean Water Plan to remove tens of thousands of lead pipes, reduce toxic contaminants like PFAS, and improve our water infrastructure while supporting 60,000 jobs.
- We’re keeping our drinking water safe by enforcing some of the strongest lead and copper rules in the country and setting new health standards for PFAS. Every parent should be able to hand their kid a glass of water from the sink and know that it’s safe.
- We established lead poisoning screenings for all students in school, giving parents peace of mind and protecting our students so they can focus on learning.
- We secured $95 million to protect families from water shutoffs and support local water affordability programs. Keeping water affordable also means supporting families when the water bill is no longer in their budget.
Michiganders expect and deserve clean, safe, and affordable water. I am proud of the steps my administration has taken to protect our water and our planet. I will work with anyone to get more shovels in the ground and build or repair critical water infrastructure. Let’s keep working together to protect access to clean drinking water, lower water bills for families and communities, and fight for our most precious natural resource.
Sincerely,
 Preventing PFAS Contamination
Environmental contamination threatens our public health, our natural resources, and our economy. My administration is committed to protecting our natural resources. Every parent deserves peace of mind that the water coming from their tap is clean, safe, and free from harmful contaminants.
We’ve learned a lot about PFAS over the past few years and how serious its impact can be. These chemicals can increase the risk of cancer, cause infertility, and even have developmental effects on children. That’s why in 2020, my administration developed one of the nation’s most comprehensive standards to limit PFAS contamination in drinking water. We also created the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team to help Michiganders protect themselves and their families.
Michigan continues to lead the nation in protecting the public from PFAS. I am proud to partner with Attorney General Dana Nessel and her office as they work to hold bad actors accountable and combat further contamination.
If PFAS has been detected in your well water, you may be eligible for alternate water or a filtration system to ensure your water is safe.
