SIGN NOW: Tell Kristi Noem to REVERSE her reckless FEMA cuts and prioritize people's safety, not cruel deportations >>
John, since taking office in January, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has slashed FEMA’s ability to respond to disasters – and anything else she doesn’t care about – so she can pour what’s left into cruel mass deportations instead.
These reckless choices have likely cost lives.
Noem recently imposed rules requiring her personal approval for any FEMA spending over $100,000 – creating red tape that officials say tied their hands and delayed life-saving aid in Texas. [1]
As a result, a call center contract lapsed, meaning thousands of calls from Texas flood survivors went unanswered. [2] Search and rescue teams trained specifically for flood disasters were forced to sit idle, waiting on Noem’s signoff. [3] That approval didn’t come until more than 3 days after the floods began – while people were trapped, missing, and dying.
Kristi Noem has gutted disaster relief and turned the Department of Homeland Security into an engine of cruelty and punishment. Add your name to demand that Noem reverse these reckless changes >>
John, FEMA was created to save lives, rebuild after devastation, and ensure a faster, more equitable recovery – especially for communities that are hit hardest and have the fewest resources to bounce back.
But Kristi Noem doesn’t seem to care about that.
FEMA should be leading recovery efforts – but Noem’s cuts have left it much less prepared to do that. That’s because she’s spent the past 6 months downplaying the federal government’s role in disaster relief and instead pushed responsibility onto overwhelmed state governments.
Noem’s primary focus now seems to be carrying out Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda – ordering mass deportations without due process, sending detainees to dangerous prisons in El Salvador [4], and cracking down on Senator Alex Padilla and anyone else who dares to speak out. [5]
That’s not leadership – it’s negligence. We deserve better from those in charge of our protection.
