Friends,

As our community continues to recover from the recent floods, I want to take a moment to thank our first responders, the state agencies, and members of our local communities who have worked tirelessly to save lives. Their efforts have made a real difference, and we’re grateful for their dedication.

If you or someone you know has questions about state resources or needs help navigating any agencies, please don’t hesitate to reach out—our office is here to assist however we can.

With a special session now underway at the Capitol, I expect to see renewed efforts to pass legislation that didn’t make it through the regular session. Your voice matters, and I encourage you to follow the process and stay involved.

In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find updates on community events, local resources, and legislative happenings. As always, we welcome your feedback and are here if you need support.

All the best,

John Bucy III

State Representative

Texas House District 136

Just one day after the bill signing deadline, Governor Abbott announced his plan to call a special session beginning July 21st—an increasingly routine maneuver that allows him to advance his personal agenda, even when it comes at the expense of taxpayers. Each special session costs millions of public dollars, often to revive legislation that failed just weeks prior.

Special sessions are intended to address urgent crises—like the devastating floods that hit our state just a few weekends ago. I intend to focus on strengthening our emergency response systems to keep Texans safe, not politicize tragedy for partisan gain.

While I am fully committed to delivering relief and resources to flood-impacted communities, I am deeply concerned by the Governor’s broader agenda for this session: further criminalizing abortion, targeting LGBTQ Texans, and undermining our democratic institutions. Most alarming is the push for a mid-decade redistricting scheme designed to create new Republican congressional seats. I will not stand by while Texas is used as a launchpad for an extremist majority in Congress—one that threatens the rights and freedoms of the people I represent.

As this special session unfolds, I encourage everyone to stay informed and engaged. Your voice matters—especially when our rights, our communities, and our values are on the line.

As recovery efforts continue across Travis and Williamson Counties, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank our incredible first responders, state agencies, and local leaders for continuing to work around the clock to save lives and bring families back together.

We’ve been in close contact with the Texas Division of Emergency Management and local officials to ensure accurate information and resources are reaching those impacted. The damage from these floods is heartbreaking, and we know many families are facing an incredibly difficult road ahead. If you or someone you know has lost property or been displaced, you can submit damages and losses to Residential, Commercial, and/or Agricultural property directly to TDEM.

Below are key guides from the Texas Department of Insurance to help you navigate flood coverage:

  • Filing an Insurance Claim After a Flood: Step-by-step guidance on documenting damage, contacting your insurance provider, and avoiding fraud.

  • If Your Car Was Flooded: What to do next if your vehicle was damaged by high water.

  • Understanding Additional Living Expenses (ALE): If your home is unlivable, your insurance may help pay for temporary housing and basic needs.

If you're looking for ways to support flood recovery efforts, please consider contributing to the Central Texas Community Foundation’s Wilco Cares Fund or the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund. You can also find other ways to get involved by using this guide from the Texas Tribune and mental health resources for children and first responders.
