Mayor Ed Gainey ran for office in 2021 promising to make Pittsburgh’s police more accountable. As his term nears its end, the director of the independent board tasked with investigating police misconduct claims says he’s coming up short.


“This administration has not been transparent, they have not been cooperative,” said Citizen Police Review Board director Beth Pittinger during a public meeting Tuesday.


She said the board’s recent requests for information from the police bureau have been met with silence. Previous protocols allowing board investigators to see body-worn camera footage are no longer being honored by the city, she said.
