Let’s face it. We’re always looking to the next presidential election. And with Trump wreaking havoc daily from the White House, Democrats wish 2028 would come as quickly as possible. One name you’ve probably been hearing a lot over the years is Gretchen Whitmer, the two-term governor of Michigan who was on former President Joe Biden’s V.P. short list in 2020. She took on Trump during his first term, especially during the pandemic. He lashed out, calling her “that woman from Michigan,” causing her stock to soar in the Democratic Party. And back when Dems were clamoring for Biden to drop out last year after his disastrous debate performance, Whitmer was at the top of a lot of folks’ wish lists to be the party’s new standard-bearer. But in Trump’s second term, Whitmer has bent over backwards to forge a positive working relationship with him, causing a lot of folks to wonder if she’s really planning to run in 2028 after all. To try and make sense out of what’s up with “Big Gretch,” we turned to Jon King, the Editor of the award-winning Michigan Advance, who took over from Lincoln Square Executive Editor Susan J. Demas. Jon and Susan talked about the fissure between Whitmer and Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel, who appeared on Lincoln Square in June to talk about her many lawsuits against the Trump administration (most of which Whitmer hasn’t joined). And if you go back to the show (posted below) you can see that photo Jon and Susan referenced of Whitmer, Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson striking a “Charlie’s Angels” pose back in happier times in 2022. Speaking of Jocelyn Benson, she’ll be on Lincoln Square at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 24 to talk about her run for governor (Whitmer’s term-limited) and protecting the right to vote and democracy in the age of Trump.
