A NOTE FROM CHRISSY
I VOTED "NO" ON THE REPUBLICAN BUDGET BILL
Joe Biden was fond of saying “Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget and I’ll tell you what you value.” Republicans in Washington, D.C., just showed us – through their budget bill – that they don’t value those people who need healthcare but can’t afford it, anyone who lives in a rural area who needs healthcare, anyone on SNAP (food stamps), people with graduate school loans, or anyone hoping for lower energy costs and more green energy options.
But that’s not all. The Republican bill rewards the very rich while exploding our national debt. This bill is a betrayal of our American values and a betrayal of pre–Trump Republicans (remember them??) who valued limited government and fiscal responsibility. It’s no wonder that two Republicans joined every single Democrat in voting against this bill.
VOTING “YES” FOR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN
Every year, I successfully push dozens of my priorities across the finish line to become law – like more paid family leave, improving child care for military families, and better cyber training for our servicemembers. Despite this hyperpolarized political environment, I think I’ll be able to do the same again this year. The first step in this process happened on July 15 when the House Armed Services Committee began debating and amending the annual defense bill (aka the NDAA).
As the most senior Democrat on the Military Personnel Subcommittee, I was able to get 31 of my initiatives into the bill covering many issues, including improvements to biosecurity, schools on military bases, and women’s healthcare.
LEADING ON BIOTECH AND BIOSECURITY
A few years ago, I passed legislation that created the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology. The world had shut down due to the rapid global spread of a virus, and we understood how vulnerable our health, our economy, and our national security could be to that kind of threat. We needed – and still do – to be able to say never again. The Commission released its comprehensive assessment to Congress in April – the short version is there is work to be done – so I started the BIOTech Caucus to raise awareness of the strength of other countries (like China) and to promote solutions that foster domestic innovation and improve our national security.
STRENGTHENING TRANSATLANTIC TIES
Our national security is strengthened by good relationships around the world, and European countries are some of our oldest and strongest allies. That’s why I was honored to be selected recently as co-chair of the Congressional Study Group on Europe. The Congressional Study Groups are long–standing nonpartisan initiatives that strengthen international ties and cooperation through dialogue and exchange programs.
DEMOCRATS ARE FIGHTING BACK
Democrats are fighting back every way we know how, and despite what the President and his Republican enablers want us to think, we're winning in some places and laying the groundwork for winning this November and next. I hope you had a chance to read the emails from my friends, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who just won her primary for New Jersey Governor, and Janelle Stelson, who currently holds a slight lead against her Republican opponent – election denier Scott Perry – for a U.S. House seat.
We're also beating President Trump in the courts: Over 320 lawsuits have been filed challenging this administration’s actions, and federal courts have issued over 200 orders blocking the administration’s illegal and unconstitutional actions. As long as President Trump, his Republican enablers, and his MAGA allies continue to undermine our values, make us less safe, and roll back our freedoms while enriching themselves, we’ll keep fighting.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: NO KINGS RALLY IN WEST CHESTER
In June, over 1 million Americans took to the streets to peacefully protest the reckless, dangerous, and autocratic behavior of President Trump. I was proud to join concerned citizens across SEPA to raise our voices. Turns out there were a lot of us – the rally in West Chester was the third largest in Pennsylvania!
Thank you for your support, John.
There's work to be done,
Chrissy
