John,
This Sunday marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising led by trans women of color 51 years ago.
At the time, police raids on LGBTQ+ bars were unfortunately common. But that night, Black and brown LGBTQ+ people like Marsha P. Johnson and Silvia Rivera at the Stonewall Inn ignited a movement across this country demanding change for the LGBTQ+ community.
It was because of them and many others that I’m able to celebrate Pride Month every June with all of you with parades, dancing, and fashion (You didn’t think I’d forget that, did you?).
This year is different. June has restored the spirit of protest to Pride as Americans across the country witness, and participate in, protests against police brutality and systemic racism. As a Black queer man in America, my basic human rights have been up for legislation every single day.
So here’s my message to you: Our vote is our power, and as Michelle Obama said, when we don’t vote, we are giving that power away. There’s hope. We can create change, and it can start with voting. Register yourself to vote today if you’re not already, and help three friends do the same.

Remember, YOU are the best person to influence the people closest to you. That’s the friends you used to go to brunch with, your neighbors on your block, your family, the people you sit next to at church, or your co-workers. Let me say that again: It’s not me. IT’S YOU! So shoot them a text and remind them to register to vote using this link: weall.vote/pride [[link removed]]
It's time for us all to speak truth to power and make a change for good and vote. We have no other choice than to continue to fight until we reach full liberty, justice, and equality for all Black people.
Next Tuesday, June 30th, I’m excited to be joining When We All Vote and Vote Proud for a Voting Squad Captain training in celebration of Pride Month. This will be a moment to come together and make sure our communities are registered and ready to vote. Let us know if you’ll be there and RSVP now. [[link removed]]
Even though Pride this year looks different, there still is reason to celebrate and reflect on the progress we’ve made. This month, the Supreme Court's historic decision to uphold LGBTQ+ rights in the workplace is a win that I hope will inspire other laws to protect our community forever.
But until then, we will not be silent. We will be seen. We will be heard. And we will vote.
In solidarity,
Billy Porter
Ambassador
