Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum toured Alcatraz and praised President Trump’s unhinged plan to reopen it. The prison closed more than 60 years ago for good reason — it proved to be extraordinarily expensive to operate due to its isolation and exposure to the marine environment. Today, Alcatraz is one of the Bay Area’s most well-known tourist destinations, drawing over 1.4 million annual visitors and generating over $60 million in revenue each year.
The National Park Service has done an incredible job in maintaining the island as a sightseeing destination, but it’s nowhere near the condition required to operate as a federal penitentiary. The entire structure would have to be demolished and rebuilt in service of the President’s whims — a plan that is as expensive as it is unrealistic.
The Trump administration has shown nothing but hostility and contempt for California, our nation’s most populous and prosperous state. Our tax dollars subsidize the rest of the country, and we deserve partners in Washington who work together in good faith on shared priorities. This latest stunt is unproductive and indicative of the President’s entire approach to California — to Trump, our state represents nothing more than a photo op.
