Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News Murder suspect in killing of Calif. parole agent was free on plea deal in 2022 stabbing The man accused of fatally shooting Officer Joshua Byrd last week in East Oakland had been told to leave a state building prior to the deadly encounter, after showing up a day late to meet with his parole officer, according to court documents released Monday. Bryan Keith Hall, 48, was charged Monday with murder in the killing of Byrd, a 40-year-old parole officer who was shot dead on Thursday inside a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation building. Alameda County prosecutors filed 10 counts against Hall, including robbery charges stemming from an alleged hold-up on a transit bus after the shooting, as well as charges tied to his alleged use of a stolen vehicle to elude police, court documents show. Hall also faces a special circumstance enhancement, which could leave him in prison for life without the possibility of parole if he’s convicted at trial. The sentencing enhancement is tied to the fact that Byrd was working as a police officer at the time of his death. Hall did not speak during his first court appearance Monday and kept his head bowed and his face hidden from view while remaining shackled and wearing a green vest mean to prevent him from harming himself. Hall did not enter a plea, and his public defender waived his arraignment during a hearing that lasted just four minutes. Hall was returned to the Santa Rita Jail, where he is being held without bail. Bay Area News Group 21-year-old landscaper killed in San Pedro shooting Loved ones are devastated after a man was shot and killed by a suspect in San Pedro in an unprovoked attack. On the morning of July 19, Mardoqueo Gomez Lopez was working with a crew of landscapers outside of a home near the 2500 block of Gaffey Street. That’s when a suspect in a white sedan crashed into their work trailer that was parked on the street. Armed with a gun, the man opened fire at the landscapers. “Within a minute [of the crash], they heard the gunshots,” said Blanco Trevino, whose home the landscapers were working on when the shooting happened. “And at that point, they said, ‘Let’s get out of here!’” Scared for their lives, the crew began running away from the gunman, seeking safe shelter nearby. While trying to escape, Lopez was struck in the back by gunfire. He was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. “[The suspect] shot through the trees and shot him in the clavicle,” Trevino told KTLA’s Sara Welch. NBC 4 ATF, LASD and LAPD serve warrant connected to deadly explosion The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday served a search warrant in Marina del Rey to follow up on leads stemming from the deadly explosion that killed three deputies. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, along with the Los Angeles Police Department, assisted deputies in serving the warrant at the 4200 block of Via Marina. Deputies said they were hoping to determine the origins of the devices located at a Santa Monica complex. LASD served a similar warrant on Monday, less than a mile away in the 13900 block of Marquesas Way. The deadly explosion happened on July 18 at the sheriff's Biscailuz Training Facility in East L.A. Senior law enforcement officials told CBS News that the LASD's bomb squad recovered at least one grenade in a Santa Monica garage along the 800 block of Bay Street the day before the explosion. CBS 2 Encino residents face 2 new break-ins after Monday's meeting about crime in area The irony of two break-ins in Encino, hours after residents met with law enforcement officials to talk about the recent rash of burglaries in their area, is not lost on homeowners on Hayvenhurst, especially Edwin Arroyave. He was at home with his four kids and their mother, "Real Housewives" star Teddi Mellencamp, when burglars broke into their home last night, running off when the alarm went off. "What else can we do?" said one exasperated resident of Enfield Avenue, where another home was broken into ten minutes prior. Like most we spoke to, this resident did not want their face on camera or identity revealed, saying, "We are being targeted, despite spending money on security systems, even replacing expensive vehicles with less affluent-looking ones, for fear of being followed home! It’s scary." Their concern is understandable. A 22-year-old man has just been charged with the murder of "American Idol" music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca. Prosecutors say Raymond Boudarian, of Encino, shot the couple when they surprised him during a burglary at their home last week. FOX 11 Doctor who gave Matthew Perry ketamine, called him a 'moron,' to plead guilty A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the weeks leading up to the "Friends" star's overdose death is expected to plead guilty Wednesday. Dr. Salvador Plasencia would be the fourth of five people charged in connection with Perry's death to plead guilty. Plasencia was to have gone on trial in August until the doctor agreed last month to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, according to the signed document filed in federal court in Los Angeles. He had previously pleaded not guilty, but in exchange for the guilty pleas prosecutors have agreed to drop three additional counts of distribution of ketamine and two counts of falsifying records. Plasencia's attorneys emphasized in an email after he reached his agreement that he "was not treating Matthew Perry at the time of his death and the ketamine that caused Mr. Perry's death was not provided by Dr. Plasencia." ABC 7 Silver Alert Activated For Missing At-Risk 78-Year-Old Woman An at-risk 78-year-old woman was reported missing after being last seen Tuesday in Highland Park, prompting the issuance of a Silver Alert. Cabanillas was described as a 5-foot-2-inch-tall woman weighing 140 pounds with brown hair and eyes. She was last seen wearing a black sweater, pants, and shoes. Anyone with information regarding Cabanillas’ whereabouts was urged to call 911. The CHP established the Silver Alert program to issue and coordinate alerts involving the unexplained or suspicious disappearances of elderly, developmentally disabled, or cognitively impaired individuals. MyNewsLA Families of the Idaho students Bryan Kohberger stabbed to death are set to see him sentenced A judge is expected to order Bryan Kohberger to serve four life sentences without parole this week for the brutal stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students nearly three years ago. Wednesday’s sentencing hearing will give the families of Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Kaylee Goncalves the opportunity to describe the anguish they’ve felt since their loved ones were killed in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022. A roommate who survived the attack, Bethany Funke, provided a statement that a friend read on her behalf in the court room. She described the day her four friends died as “the worst day of my life, and I know it always will be.” Kohberger remained expressionless as the testimony went on. Kohberger was a graduate student at Washington State University when he broke into a nearby rental home through a kitchen sliding door and killed the four friends who appeared to have no connection with him. Police initially had no suspects, and the killings terrified the normally quiet community in the small, western Idaho city of Moscow. Some students at both universities left mid-semester, taking the rest of their classes online because they felt unsafe. MyNewsLA West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes found in Los Angeles County for the first time in 2025 West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes were found in Los Angeles County for the first time this year, officials confirmed. The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District confirmed the positive samples in a news release on Wednesday. It said as many as six detections were made throughout the county. The mosquitoes were located in: Arleta, South El Monte, Valley Glen, Van Nuys, Panorama City, and Lake Balboa. "West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne disease transmitted to people through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito," said Steve Vetrone, GLACVCD Assistant General Manager of Vector Management. "The virus is endemic to Los Angeles County with activity typically increasing during the summer months." The GLACVCD says Culex mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, and the public can reduce the threat of West Nile virus by eliminating standing water and ensuring that pools, spas and ponds are properly maintained. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
