There is a dangerous attack on our democracy happening in Texas right now.
Republicans in Washington, DC have ordered Texas officials to push for the redistricting of their current Congressional lines. Without planning, without notice, or without thought, Republicans ordered a special session in the Texas Legislature to do just that. Here’s why this is so dangerous:
Redistricting in states is supposed to happen after our ten-year census is counted. Lines are meant to reflect population changes, to ensure every district in every state is fair and voters have an equal chance to have their voice heard. But Donald Trump is directing Republicans to redraw lines out of turn to ensure they can pad their numbers in the House.
This is a gross misuse of power. Republicans know how critical ruby red Texas is to holding on to their majority. And with only 3 seats needed for Democrats to flip the House, Republicans will stop at nothing to keep the power in their hands – even if it means silencing Democratic voters in one of the largest states in the country.
States themselves are in charge of redistricting. For Donald Trump to use his federal authority to demand Texas enter the redistricting process would mean our democracy itself is being threatened.
We’ve heard from so many of this grassroots team that voting rights and our democracy are a top priority. Protecting our sacred right to vote and our Founding Fathers’ intentions for equal representation is now more crucial than ever.
