The Pennsylvania House passed HB 1697, the Taxpayer Prevention Against Fraud Act — our state-level version of the False Claims Act — and I hope my colleagues will join me to pass it in the State Senate or my companion version, SB38.
There is a lot of talk right now about Medicaid/Medicare fraud by individuals. But the reality is that the vast majority of taxpayer money lost to fraud is not the result of individuals receiving benefits. It’s from corporations intentionally lying and billing the state and federal governments for services that have not been rendered.
The best way to stop massive taxpayer fraud is to protect the employees who come forward to report it. Pennsylvania is leaving taxpayer dollars on the table every year by not protecting whistleblowers and prosecuting the tips that they bring forward.
But here’s the catch: now that the State House has acted, it’s up to the State Senate to finally pass this critical legislation and send it to the Governor’s desk.
