A Note From the Desk of Congresswoman Letlow
It has been a busy and productive time both in Washington and back home in Louisiana’s 5th District. In the House, we took a major step forward by passing the Big Beautiful Bill. This landmark legislation delivers real tax relief for working families, seniors, serviceworkers, and small businesses across America. This bill reflects our commitment to building a pro-family tax code and keeping more of your hard-earned money in your pocket.
Additionally, the Big Beautiful Bill includes provisions to increase border security, boost our Louisiana energy, and support our farmers. Included in the legislation was part of my Drought Assistance Improvement Act, which strengthens disaster relief for livestock producers by allowing more timely payments for producers who suffer grazing losses due to drought.
I’ve also had the opportunity to spend valuable time in the district visiting with constituents, touring local businesses, and hearing directly from the people I serve. From conversations with community leaders to site visits at hospitals and manufacturing facilities, these experiences guide my work and strengthen your voice in Congress.
Please feel free to always reach out to my office directly when you have questions, comments, or concerns. My office is always accessible through our website by clicking here. We are here to serve you!
Sincerely,
Julia Letlow, Ph.D.
Member of Congress
Entering the Golden Age of America
Under President Trump’s leadership, America is entering a new golden age. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’m proud to support President Trump’s push to get our country’s finances back on track by rooting out wasteful spending and providing tax relief for working class Louisianans. I recently went on Real America’s Voice to talk about how his leadership is making a real difference in shaking up the status quo in Washington. We’re also seeing real progress in cutting waste, reducing the size of the federal government, and reining in unnecessary spending. Balancing the budget isn’t just about dollars and cents - it’s about making sure our children and grandchildren aren’t stuck with a large debt that is impossible to repay. With the tools now in place, I believe President Trump is once again putting us on the path to prosperity - and I’ll keep fighting alongside him every step of the way!
Traveling through the 5th District
I always look forward to being home in Louisiana’s 5th district. Spending time with my constituents allows me the opportunity to listen and take your input back to Washington. On our recent district work week, I had the pleasure of visiting with the Rotary Club of Ferriday, where we had good conversations about the benefits of President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill and supporting local communities. I also toured Syrah Technologies in Vidalia, where I listened and learned about their critical manufacturing efforts, and met with local officials in Washington Parish. In West Feliciana Parish, I visited the West Feliciana Hospital, touring their impressive facility and discussing the needs of our rural hospitals. I am deeply grateful for our healthcare workers and the work they do to lift up our communities.
Ouachita River Designation
We have great news to celebrate on the rural economic development front! Earlier this month, the Ouachita River was officially designated a U.S. Marine Highway, unlocking new investment opportunities in our waterways infrastructure! The Ouachita River is a wonderful natural resource right in our backyard that can be used to improve Louisiana’s economy through greater shipping of our goods, such as agricultural commodities. I officially requested this designation in March, which the U.S. Department of Transportation has now granted. This distinction allows for companies and agencies to become eligible for new infrastructure grants so we can take advantage of the river's vast potential.
Preparing for Hurricane Season
As many of you know, Hurricane season is officially upon us. Our state knows all too well the devastating power of these storms, and now is the time to start preparing. According to recent forecasts, Louisiana remains one of the states with high risk of impact this hurricane season. I will continue to work closely with federal and state emergency management to ensure that our parishes have the resources needed for this season. Please ensure that your family has a plan and stay connected to official updates. As always, let’s do what Louisianans do best and look out for one another. My office is ready and able to assist in any way we can. You can check out a full list of resources on my website here.
Supporting Louisiana Farmers
I'll always fight for the hardworking farmers and producers who grow our food supply. Agriculture is the backbone of our rural communities, and unfair trade practices have a direct effect on our agricultural economy. That’s why I introduced legislation to create a dedicated fund to support our farmers when global markets shift. This bill would allow money collected from tariffs on foreign agricultural products to go directly to American farmers impacted by trade-related losses. Whether it's a drop in exports, higher input costs, or new trade barriers from other countries, this fund would be there to provide timely, targeted help. As President Trump works to hold those countries accountable, I’m working to make sure our ag community has the backup they need. I’ll always stand with our farmers because when they succeed, our families, our towns, and our state are stronger.
Improving Education for America's Children
As a mother and former educator, I know that a quality education is key to helping our children succeed. That’s why I’m working on legislation with Congresswoman Jill Tokuda (D-HI) to provide more support for educators when opening public charter schools. My Empower Charter School Educators to Lead Act recently passed the House Education and Workforce Committee, and fills a critical gap in removing barriers to creating more innovative, student-focused learning environments. Our bill allows charter school applicants to use up to 5% of their federal grants for planning and preparation purposes, cutting red tape for educators navigating a bureaucratic application process. These reforms can unlock more opportunities for students, ensuring that all students have access to a school that fits their needs.
