Hey there John, it's Aru.
This past weekend, I was at the Minneapolis Democratic Party convention, and I have an EXCITING win to share with you.
Omar Fateh won the Democratic nomination for mayor over current Mayor Jacob Frey, who has consistently stood in the way of the political change we NEED.
Omar Fateh has been endorsed by Sunrise Twin Cities, and with good reason. He’s running on a bold platform: taxing the wealthy to pay their fair share and using the money to:
Two lessons I’m really taking away from this.
First, our ideas are winning. Everyday people are getting involved and running for office on bold platforms aimed at making everyday people’s lives better, and we’re WINNING. Donald Trump’s agenda is unpopular and people want politicians who are willing to FIGHT BACK. (and some of those people are even running as *gasp* SOCIALISTS).
Second, it’s going to take movements and leaders grounded in community to lead the fight against Trump and the billionaires who are bankrolling his fascism. These wins didn't just happen overnight. They happened because everyday people got involved, knocked doors, talked to their neighbors, and showed up through a long caucus proces that culminated in a 14 hour convention.
This doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes training, messaging discipline, and hard organizing on the ground, day in and day out to organize our communities and change what’s possible.
We’re training young people every day to get involved and fight back against these billionaires who think they can own our democracy and our lives.
