On Monday, July 21, Refuse Fascism NYC led a protest and speak-out at the Ed Sullivan Theater as ticket holders waited in line to get into The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Our message? Colbert Stays! Trump Must Go!

The cancellation of Colbert by CBS/Paramount is, in effect, collaboration with the Trump regime’s suppression of dissenting voices and culture. In the face of advancing fascism, even if there are financial considerations – this is a time to support dissenting voices, not to cancel them.

Our protest garnered local, national, and international media coverage from entertainment and general news outlets. Footage from the protest went viral over social media. There was an electric and joyful disturbance in the air. Suddenly the terms that people were willing to accept shifted as people went from quiet anger to loud defiance, joining their voices to demand “Colbert Stays! Trump Must Go…Now!”

To meet this moment, we must urgently model the ways to disrupt business as usual and build the tools, networks, and political muscle for everyone, wherever you are, to act now. We must act now in ways that grow into mass noncompliance and non-violent resistance—millions refusing to go along with the fascist program, making it impossible for the regime to carry out its horrors; impossible for Trump to govern this country; and impossible for him to even hold onto power.
