On June 15, the new Postmaster General of the United States took office.
His name is Louis DeJoy, and he’s the first postmaster general in two decades not to rise through the ranks of the United States Postal Service to get the job.
Instead, he just gave a lot of money to Donald Trump’s re-election. The $1.2 million DeJoy donated to the Trump Victory Fund was apparently enough to buy him USPS. And now that Trump’s put his top loyalist in charge, all signs point to a GOP-led effort to wipe the agency off the map.
Why else would the Trump administration block the $25 billion Congress allocated for USPS in the CARES Act -- especially when USPS was forecasting they’d be bankrupt by September?
USPS going out of business is exactly what Trump and his allies want to see. No Postal Service means no way for the country to process the massive amount of mail-in ballots expected to be cast this election.
And the environment of voter suppression, confusion, and chaos that would result is exactly what Trump could use to steal the election -- or dispute the results of his loss.
We won’t let the GOP kill an American institution just to save their failure of a president.
