SIGN: No Nobel Peace Prize for Trump!
Dear MoveOn member,
Donald Trump is angling for a Nobel Peace Prize—a distinguished award granted to leaders or organizations who broker lasting peace between nations. In fact, he's been obsessed with the award since his first term, going so far as to make a fake replica for the Oval Office.1
Despite his clear lack of qualifications for the award, world leaders and lawmakers trying to sidle up to the president have nominated him for the award—including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.2
Sign the petition to tell the Norwegian Nobel Committee: NO Nobel Peace Prize for Trump. Republicans have also piled on, suggesting that Trump's attacks on Iran make him a candidate for the award. But let's be clear: Potentially embroiling the United States in more endless wars shouldn't be an award-winning act—it should be immediately disqualifying for a Nobel Peace Prize.3
While in office, Trump has failed to meaningfully support Ukraine, halting aid earlier this year and taking months to finally show signs of support.4 Recently, the head of Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee withdrew his nomination, saying he had "lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to secure a ceasefire.5
And the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has entered its 20th month because Trump hasn't used the levers at his control to bring the senseless violence to an end. In recent weeks, nearly one thousand Palestinians were killed just trying to access food.6 The Trump administration's complete disregard for the United Nations' recommendations for desperately needed independent aid to address widespread famine, instead aligning with Prime Minister Netanyahu despite concerns of war crimes, is the opposite of fostering peace.7
Trump has cozied up to dangerous and corrupt leaders—he should NOT be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Will you sign the petition?
Only four U.S. presidents have ever received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919), Jimmy Carter (2002), and Barack Obama (2009). And all of them received the prize for their role in advancing diplomacy and bringing about the end to brutal wars.8
Globally, it's clear Trump has no interest in building long-term peace. He has raised tariffs and threatened the U.S.'s traditional allies with trade wars, causing a rise in costs that trickles down to consumers.9 His administration's dismantling of USAID could result in the deaths of 14 million people, including 4.5 million children, by 2030.10
Here at home, Trump has deployed the National Guard against Americans to break up peaceful protests.11 He championed a federal budget bill alongside Republicans in Congress that slashed Medicaid and food stamp benefits. And he continues to use Immigration and Customs Enforcement to disappear people off the streets, infringing on our constitutional rights.
Indulging Trump with a Nobel Peace Prize would completely strip the award of any and all credibility. Sign the petition if you agree that Trump should NOT be considered for this international honor.
Thanks for all you do.
