Hi,

Last night's election results were stunning: in New York, longtime member
of Congress Elliot Engel was defeated by progressive challenger Jamaal
Bowman.

This is going to have major repercussions in Congress -- including how our
country's foreign policy is conducted. Rep. Engel is currently the Chair
of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a powerful body that plays a major
role in shaping how the United States conducts itself abroad.

Members of Congress are already maneuvering to decide who will replace
Engel as chair of this crucial committee. Some of the people being
described as possible successors supported the Iraq War and even opposed
President Obama's Iran nuclear deal. We need to make sure the next Chair
moves away from neo-conservative, pro-war policies and instead provides
strong, progressive leadership for peace and human rights. Can you help by
adding your name to this petition right now?

prioritizes diplomacy over militarism!

For decades, U.S. foreign policy has been overly focused on confrontation
with perceived adversaries and the global projection of U.S. military
power.

Doing so has militarized our response to global challenges, distorted our
national security priorities, and left us woefully ill-prepared to
confront the growing transnational threats to human security we face today
that do not have military solutions.

We are demanding a fundamental shift in U.S. foreign policy.

It is time to end our endless wars and adopt a new approach to
international relations, one in which the U.S. abides by international
law, encourages others to do the same, and utilizes our military solely
for the defense of the people of our country.

This progressive shift of foreign policy principles includes: returning
war powers to Congress; reducing the Pentagon budget; engaging with Iran
and North Korea; rejecting discriminatory immigration policies and
supporting refugees; and ending support for governments that violate human
rights, among others.

With Rep. Engel's defeat, we have the chance to forge a progressive
foreign policy path in Congress and beyond -- one that centers human
rights and prioritizes diplomacy over militarism. But we need you to speak
up right now. Will you help?
