Fellow activist,
We wanted to share a recent op-ed published by The Bucks County Beacon by Daniel J. Mallinson from Penn State with you today.
Here’s a recap:
As the piece states, this November, Pennsylvania voters will head to the polls for critical local, municipal, and judicial elections, including retention votes for three justices on the state Supreme Court.
For the PA Supreme Court, these are non-partisan retention elections. That means voters will decide whether to keep the current justices (all of whom were elected as Democrats) or to remove them. Should voters vote against a judge’s retention, Governor Shapiro will be able to make a temporary replacement to fill the seat until a special election can be held. However, the Republican-controlled state senate is unlikely to confirm his picks.
Here’s the thing: MAGA is working to politicize our state Supreme Court, and this is becoming more urgent as the Trump regime tries to punish judges and justices that it sees as working against their agenda. Our courts play a significant role in critical issues that impact our everyday lives, from reproductive rights to climate change, voting, redistricting, and many more. With PA being a battleground state, these elections are gaining more and more attention, and we need to be prepared.
Earlier this year, Wisconsin had the most expensive state judicial race in US history, with $100 million in spending, including $20 million spent by Elon Musk. This was for one seat – the PA Supreme Court has three justices up for retention.
Republicans are already eyeing this as their opportunity to reverse the progressive majority on the PA Supreme Court and regain power. This would have a drastic impact on the people of our state, and we need to be ready.
This election will be here before we know it – help us provide civic education to Pennsylvanians and ensure they are ready to vote in November’s critical local, municipal, and judicial election by rushing $25 or more today.
