Hey team,
By now, you may have heard that Georgia Republicans are preparing to purge nearly 500,000 voters across the state. But don’t worry if this is your first time hearing about it, team. We’re here to break down what this means for our democracy and voting freedom.
What exactly is happening?
The state of Georgia is preparing for the second-largest voter purge in the state’s history — and what would also be one of the largest in U.S. history. Nearly 500,000 people are at risk of having their voter registration canceled, meaning they’d lose their eligibility to vote in Georgia almost immediately.
Who is behind this?
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is leading the way, and he’s backed by Georgia Republicans and MAGA extremists.
Where is this happening?
The purge list consists of voters who are registered in Georgia and have been marked as inactive for various reasons, including out-of-state college students, members of the military, or even frequent, long-time Georgia voters who may have missed out on voting in any recent elections. The list also includes people who may have moved out of Georgia.
When is this happening?
If a voter has been placed on the inactive list by the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, and does not contact their county office to be re-activated, they will be removed from the voter rolls by August 20th.
Why are they doing this?
Republicans claim this is “routine maintenance” in the name of keeping the rolls clean. But we know all too well that past purges have removed thousands of eligible Georgia voters, and historically, have disproportionately impacted Black and brown voters.
How are they doing this?
By relying on flawed data, outdated records, and wrongful “use it or lose it” assumptions, Georgia is stripping eligible voters of their registration.
Fair Fight is fighting back — but we can’t do it alone. There has never been a more critical time to power our pro-voter movement and prepare for more attacks on voting freedom from Georgia Republicans and MAGA cronies everywhere. Donate to fuel our efforts >>
