 CHAMPION MESSAGE

"Sport is an unusual if not unique institution. It is a public space where the relevance of sex is undeniable, and where pretending that it is irrelevant… will cause the very harm Title IX was enacted to address… Claims to the contrary are simply a denial of science."

- Martina Navratilova, 18-time tennis Grand Slam winner

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Demand Fair Play and Protect Women’s Sports

We can’t ignore biological differences when it comes to sports. Allowing male-bodied athletes to compete with female athletes puts women’s physical safety at risk and takes away valuable opportunities for women and girls to participate in and win sporting competitions. Demand rules that protect fair play.

Thanks WHO, but Women Don’t Need Your Breastfeeding Advice

The World Health Organization (WHO) yet again disappoints by keeping vital information from a very vulnerable demographic: new moms. Thousands of people around the world are mourning the deaths of their loved ones and WHO lifestyle policy recommendations—such as the prohibition of the marketing of breast milk substitutes—are only adding to the mental and economic pressures with which new moms are grappling. Shaming these moms for choosing breast milk substitutes is disgraceful. Women who want to breastfeed should be free to do so.

Juneteenth’s Roots Lie in the Declaration of Independence

June 19th, also referred to as “Juneteenth” or Freedom Day, marks the day in 1865 that Union soldiers finally read the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved African Americans in geographically isolated Galveston, Texas. Arguments that the accomplishments celebrated on Juneteenth represent a rejection of America’s irredeemably racist founding are becoming increasingly pronounced. In reality, however, Juneteenth is not a deviation from, but the fruition of America’s organic law. The seeds of Juneteenth were sowed on July 4 in the Declaration’s pronouncement that “all men (meaning all human beings) are created equal..."

TWO TRUTHS & A LIE

The Administrative State

Federal administrative agencies have never been more powerful. They decide what permits farmers must obtain before they can plow their own fields, when a veteran’s benefits may be granted retroactively, and even what contraceptives must be included in employers’ insurance plans. In fact, it is difficult to count the number of agencies.

Can you identify which of the following statements about administrative agencies is not true?

A:  In our system of representative government, Congress alone makes the law, the president enforces or executes the law, and the Supreme Court interprets the law.
B:  Administrative agencies do 12 times as much law-making as Congress.
C:  The Chevron doctrine requires the judiciary to defer to an agency’s interpretation of federal law even when that interpretation is not the best one. Further, the Supreme Court currently permits agencies to fill in the gaps of federal statutes so long as Congress has put forth an intelligible principle.

Open the Schools

Few parents or teachers think that online schooling is a reasonable substitute for the real thing. Students are asked to watch videos and complete worksheets, but it’s hard to tell who is understanding the material, and even harder to help when there is little time for real-time interaction. Medical experts seem to agree that the coronavirus does not affect children in significant numbers. As other countries hit hard by the virus are opening schools, the United States needs to do so as well.

The Coronavirus Pandemic May Leave Lasting Scars on Generation Z

This summer has the potential to negatively affect the rest of Generation Z’s lives. As the shutdown drags on, the unemployment rate has soared for Gen Z more than for any other age group. Joblessness jumped more than 20 points from February to April for workers between 16 and 19 years old, and just under 20 points for those aged 20–24. This spike resulted in a higher unemployment rate than during the 2009 recession. Worse still, according to data from past recessions, students graduating during an economic downturn often must combat lower wages and slower career growth for decades.

Florida Occupational Licensing Bill Awaits Signature

The Occupational Freedom and Opportunity Act, hailed as the “most ambitious occupational deregulation package in state history,” will deliver on the promises of its name—taking away unnecessary barriers for Americans to work and earn a living. After finally passing both the Florida House and Senate, it awaits Governor Ron DeSantis’ signature. Here at IWF, we’ve been working to encourage states to realize how many of their regulations are unnecessary, particularly through our Chasing Work campaign. We celebrate and applaud the leadership of Florida lawmakers to help Americans work.
