The Republican Party of New Mexico is sad to inform you that former Dona Ana County Chairwoman Betty Bishop passed away this morning. Betty died at her home after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was 55.
Betty served as County Chair from 2017-2019 and became an active voice in the Republican Party and in her community. She recruited hundreds of county, state and federal candidates over the years and worked tirelessly on many political campaigns.
In 2014 she ran for New Mexico House District 35.
Betty also served many years as an analyst at the New Mexico legislature, using her policy and bill-drafting skills.
Her mother, Reyna Soto, told RPNM today that Betty was “a good, strong woman who believed in helping her community and advancing her conservative principles to others. She was a lovely person and was loved in her county. She will be greatly missed. She was a fearless woman and brave until the end.”
Betty was born in Kentucky, grew up in Silver City and moved to Las Cruces in 1983. She became deeply involved in conservative politics and Republican activities at an early age.
“Betty’s dedication, drive and devotion to her work in the Republican will be missed. She was a great lady, who helped inspire others. She had a brilliant political mind, and her influence as County Chair was truly felt. Today we lost a friend and a devoted public servant,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Steve Pearce.
Betty and her husband own a roofing business in Las Cruces, and she was also loved in the business community.
