Friends,
A few years ago, local businessman Jim Holleman gave me a copy of a book called Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design, by Charles Montgomery. The book makes the case that people can be happier when the communities they live in are better designed.
I agree!
Public places that are safe, inviting and connected encourages people to gather and interact.
Families enjoy the recently renovated and reopened Augusta Quarry in South Knoxville.
Neighbors chat while dogs play at Love Towers dog park, installed by the City in the spring.
I ran into my neighbor Amir walking along a sidewalk. He invited me for a quick game of Ping Pong in his backyard. Despite the fact that he beat me handily, the serendipitous encounter made me happy!
Turns out that welcoming public spaces do makes us happier.
From the new amenities at Augusta Quarry, to neighborhood dog parks, to the simple pleasure of walking on sidewalks and running into neighbors, I am committed to creating and maintaining such spaces for Knoxville. You can learn more about my Local Option Proposal to invest in great public spaces at KnoxvilleTN.gov/LocalOption ([link removed]) .
I hope this summer has given you the chance to explore and enjoy some of Knoxville's great public spaces!
