My son Harry began abusing opioids when he was 14 years old. I thank God every day that he’s alive and sober today. Countless families haven’t been so lucky.

I share my family’s story of addiction and recovery, and all the hope, challenges, and heartbreaking realities within, because it’s tragically common. On top of fighting the addiction itself, we’re fighting the shame that keeps folks silent about it.

In 2023, more than 76,000 Americans died of an opioid overdose. In 2024, that number was about 48,000. Thankfully, the numbers are on a downward trend, but we’re still losing about 130 people every day to preventable overdose. And I can’t help but think about my own son and what could have happened if he hadn’t shared his struggle.

According to the CDC, some of that decrease in overdose deaths is attributable to the widespread distribution of the medication naloxone (also known as Narcan), which can help reverse an overdose and prevent death. Used correctly, it’s nothing short of miraculous.

And what is the Trump Administration doing amidst this heartening progress?

Cutting $56 million in funding for life-saving naloxone training for first responders.
Withholding $140 million budgeted explicitly to fight the growing number of addictions.

It’s infuriating.

Headlines

Let me be very clear: young people will die as a result of these budget cuts. We can see that in the CDC data. So why are we doing it?

Addiction is a public health crisis that touches countless American families. The Trump Administration is sentencing these families to more trauma and pain. It breaks my heart, but it also fuels my fire. And I will continue my fight against Donald Trump’s budget cuts to make sure every victim of the opioid crisis has the same opportunity and resources to recover as my son Harry did.
