** EARN Notice July 2025

It’s been a somber summer where I live in Minnesota. Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman are my ([link removed]) legislators. I voted for them, knocked doors for them.
It’s hard to experience how quickly much of the country has moved on from this tragedy, but it’s also true that time waits for no one. In the weeks since the attacks on our legislators here, terrible ([link removed]) reconciliation bill that will deepen inequities, harm low-income communities, reward the ultra-wealthy, and give the administration more ([link removed]) tools to terrorize immigrant workers and families. We’re immensely impressed by the work EARN groups, partners, and allies did to educate and inform the public about the damage this bill would do in every state across the country. Together you helped make this bill’s major provisions broadly unpopular, laying important groundwork for the fights ahead to do our best to block, mitigate, and someday reverse, its worst
harms.
in the face of mounting threats, and we’re grateful to stand alongside you as we go forward. Our forthcoming new series, Holding the , offers a state policy roadmap for shoring up labor standards and workers’ rights at the state level. When we can no longer rely upon the federal government to enforce its laws on overtime, safe and healthy workplaces, nondiscrimination, and the right to form a union, we must look to states to backstop and strengthen protections we too often take for granted. Let us know what you think – the series will be ongoing and we want it to be useful to you all.
We’re also proud to continue work with EARN in the South partners on building progressive infrastructure and worker power in the South. The latest ([link removed]) installment in our Rooted in Racism ([link removed]) series on the failed Southern economic development model talks about the specific link between starved public services and racial employment and wage gaps.
Please take a moment to drop us a line at
[email protected] (mailto:
[email protected]) to let us know how you’re doing. Things are happening so fast that it’s easy to lose track of your friends. We want to celebrate your successes, mourn your losses, and share your passion in the fight.
More than ever, in these times, we need space and time to be together - to build solidarity, strengthen our community, and re-energize ourselves for the challenges to come. Please join us at EARNCon, November 12-14, in New Orleans. I look forward to seeing you all.
Yours in Solidarity,
Dave Kamper

Foraging for Data in the Wild: Finding, loading, and wrangling economic data with R
Tuesday, August 9, 2025, at 2:30 pm ET
Your next economic analysis might begin with a messy, obscure dataset, hosted as table on an outdated website, fissured across multiple spreadsheets, or structured in an unworkable form. Valuable data exists in countless formats and varying states of “cleanliness” waiting to be analyzed. Attend this workshop to learn basic techniques for importing and cleaning diverse forms of data in R. Session facilitators will share useful R libraries, functions, and APIs to help you access, clean, and get your data analysis ready.
Requirements: basic experience coding in R, familiarity with the RStudio interface, and ability to install R libraries (sufficient system permissions)

At EARNCon 2025 ([link removed]) , we will lay the groundwork needed for an equity-enhancing, worker-centered, state and local research and policy agenda for 2026 and beyond.

EARN 101: We hosted this workshop on June 24th, 2025, for those who are new to the EARN community or are less familiar with the EARN network to learn about the resources we provide and how we work with an array of partners (union, grassroots, state and local government) to advance worker power and racial and gender justice. This webinar also included a demo of some of our data resources and offered guidance on how staff can take advantage of EPI's and the network's deep well of expertise.
