The radical right-wing Supreme Court majority is destroying the system of checks and balances our Founders invented nearly 250 years ago.

Checks and balances are the cornerstone of our democracy, and this hand-picked majority is handing over more and more authority to a president who thinks of himself as a king.

We need to bring back some checks and balances IMMEDIATELY. That is why we are focused on the midterm and gaining a Democratic majority in the House. With just that ounce of majority power, we will have the ability to implement more checks and balances on the extremist agenda sweeping our government.

You don’t have to take my word for it that our democracy is slipping from our grasp — take the words of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Here’s what she had to say in her scathing dissent after the Supreme Court majority voted to end federal judges’ ability to stop overtly unconstitutional executive orders, like President Trump’s call to end birthright citizenship:“Perhaps the degradation of our rule-of-law regime would happen anyway… But this court’s complicity in the creation of a culture of disdain for lower courts, their rulings, and the law (as they interpret it) will surely hasten the downfall of our governing institutions, enabling our collective demise.”

“The downfall of our governing institutions.” This is a rallying cry, and we need to listen.

We must take Justice Jackson’s warning seriously: the decisions of this radical majority will enable “our collective demise.” I hate to say this, but I must: she is right.

Abraham Lincoln said this about our nation in 1838: “If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” In other words, the only way the United States could be destroyed is at the hands of its own citizens.
