UI researcher: Medicaid cuts could complicate care in rural Iowa • Iowa Capital Dispatch

A professor at the University of Iowa predicts that the coming Medicaid cuts will reduce levels of adequate medical care across rural Iowa. In his previous research on prenatal care access in rural areas, he found that individuals living in the affected counties where labor and delivery units closed or reduced services, patients were 24% more likely to have inadequate prenatal care than if they had lived in neighboring counties, with people on Medicaid having an even higher rate of 38%. Those numbers stood true even in counties with other prenatal services available through family practices.

Travelers to the U.S. must pay a new $250 'visa integrity fee' — what to know

Trump, in his infinite wisdom, is adding a new $250 fee to international visitors to the United States. This move could potentially hurt foreign tourism, as well as the towns and cities across the country that depend on it.

Representatives on the Record

Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (202) 225-6576

Does Rep. Miller-Meeks support rural clinics and hospitals closing in Iowa? Then why did she vote for Medicaid cuts that could make that future become a reality? Even for people who are not on Medicaid, the difference between receiving emergency care at a local hospital versus a county over can be the difference between life and death. What is she doing to make sure Iowans across the state have access to affordable and local healthcare? Why isn’t she fighting in Congress for the constituents that elected her, instead of the millionaires she loves to give tax breaks to?

Representative Ashley Hinson (202) 225-2911

Does Rep. Hinson support rural clinics and hospitals closing in Iowa? Then why did she vote for Medicaid cuts that could make that future become a reality? Even for people who are not on Medicaid, the difference between receiving emergency care at a local hospital versus a county over can be the difference between life and death. Representative Zach Nunn (515) 400-8180

Does Rep. Nunn support rural clinics and hospitals closing in Iowa? Then why did he vote for Medicaid cuts that could make that future become a reality? Even for people who are not on Medicaid, the difference between receiving emergency care at a local hospital versus a county over can be the difference between life and death. Representative Randy Feenstra (712) 224-4692

Does Rep. Feenstra support rural clinics and hospitals closing in Iowa? Then why did he vote for Medicaid cuts that could make that future become a reality? Note From the Chair

Hey folks! Rita Hart here.

We warned Iowa’s Republican representatives that passing their Big, Ugly, Lying Law would hurt rural health providers and the families that rely on them. They said we were spreading misinformation, and that only ‘illegals and fraudsters’ would be hurt by their over one trillion dollar cut to Medicaid.

Here's what we know: A researcher at the University of Iowa who has already done studies on clinic closings impacting prenatal care believes that these Medicaid cuts will cause hospitals to shut down in rural communities and impact every patient involved, whether they rely on Medicaid or not.

Remember, these cuts were only made so that Republicans could give massive tax breaks to the wealthiest among us.

They may have done the damage, but we can still let them know this won’t be forgotten about in 2026. Call your representatives. Let them know what you think about their Medicaid cuts. You can also join upcoming protests, rallies, and events. You can find them on our calendar by clicking here, and you can also sign up to volunteer with the Iowa Democratic Party by clicking here.

I appreciate your continued involvement and support of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Sincerely,

Rita Hart
