Open Appointments Application Process - What Else to Know

  • Board contacts can answer questions about applying for a seat.
  • Appointing authorities are organizations that review applications and decide who to appoint to vacant seats.
  • You may apply for a seat after the twenty-one-day posting period but keep in mind that the appointing authority may have finished reviewing applications by that time.
  • Applications remain active for one year unless withdrawn by the applicant.
  • During that year, applications to a board may be considered for any vacancy on that board.

QUESTIONS

Send questions about application timelines, special requirements, or amending applications to the board staff listed on a board's Office of Minnesota Secretary of State (OSS) webpage.

Here's how to contact board staff:

  1. On the OSS Boards & Commissions website, search for the board's name under the blue Boards & Commissions tab.
  2. Click on the blue hyperlink for that board.

Minnesotans are encouraged to become involved in their communities by serving on one of Minnesota's 286 Open Appointments boards, councils, task forces, and advisory councils.

Based on Minnesota's Open Appointments Laws, the Secretary of State (OSS) acts as an administrator by publishing board vacancies, receiving applications, and recording appointments.

OSS does not screen applicants or provide input on who to appoint.
