Dear Neighbors,
Our state has endured trauma over the past four weeks. One month after being assassinated in their home, we remain heartbroken and horrified by the loss of Melissa and Mark Hortman.
Hortmans
Melissa was our friend, our leader, and a champion for Minnesotans. Mark was by her side supporting her every step of the way. These two extraordinary people are missed tremendously by so many.
A mentor for all, Speaker Emerita Hortman epitomized what a model public servant should be. Her humble demeanor, values, and integrity were examples that brightened the halls of the Capitol and shined a light on the way forward for a better Minnesota for all. It was a blessing to know and work with her.
We continue to hold Melissa and Mark's children, families, friends, and loved ones in our hearts, and we continue to keep John, Yvette, and Hope Hoffman in our thoughts as they recover and heal.
Whether it's at the State Capitol or in our communities, we will keep serving the people of Minnesota and keep working hard to build the future that Melissa and Mark Hortman believed in. Building a stronger future means working together to enact statewide solutions, regardless of party affiliation.

*Community Coffee Hour on July 26*
To that end, I’m holding a community coffee hour at the Galaxie Library on Saturday, July 26th at 9:30 a.m. I’d like to check in to see how you’re doing, help answer questions, and hear about how the recent federal budget bill and the cuts that come with it, including to health care access, could impact you or your loved ones.

*New Laws in Minnesota*
On July 1, our new state budget took effect, along with the majority of the new bipartisan laws enacted this past session. As with all of this year’s successful legislation, these new initiatives are the product of compromise. While there are certainly components of the budget I wish were different there are still plenty of new commonsense policies and investments to be proud of, including the funds I secured locally to rebuild the Zoo’s nearly 50-year-old animal hospital.
Statewide highlights include strengthening our state’s mental health system, implementing harsher DWI penalties and enforcement, a required response plan in all Minnesota schools for cardiac arrest, required access to free water at ticketed events of 100 or more people, and protections for children who appear in online media.
Minnesota Public Radio provided a brief overview of some of these laws and more [ [link removed] ], but if you’d like a deep dive of what’s been implemented, you can read a nonpartisan summary of all the new laws here [ [link removed] ].

*Fairview Earns Recognition for Excellence in Community Service*
Fairview Health Services in Minnesota is the 2025 winner of the AHA’s Foster G. McGaw Prize for Excellence in Community Service! I was thrilled to celebrate this prestigious award and forward-thinking community-based model with Fairview, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Mayor Melvin Carter and many others.
Health care delivery goes beyond treating illness. As the chair of the House Health Finance Committee, a dad, and Apple Valley neighbor, I'm proud of Fairview's nation-leading commitment to actively building healthier, more vibrant communities across the state.
