Dear SPUC supporter,
It cannot be denied that it has been a devastating year so far for the pro-life movement. Despite heroic efforts by our supporters and the pro-life movement as a whole, the space of just one week in June 2025, MPs voted to decriminalise abortion up to birth and to legalise assisted suicide.
We will of course continue to fight both of these proposals in the Lords. But this needs to be a turning point where we fight back to build a culture of life.
We know that change is possible. There was very little that was inevitable about the campaign to abolish the slave trade. Slavery had many wealthy and influential supporters, who bitterly resisted any change. Before William Wilberforce finally managed to pass his Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807, anti-slavery bills had been defeated again and again in Parliament. Wilberforce himself first decided to campaign on the issue in 1787 – 20 years before the Slave Trade Act was passed – and it would be another 26 years before slavery itself was abolished.
Despite the culture of death’s present stranglehold on our political establishment, at SPUC we are as determined as ever to make abortion unthinkable and defeat assisted suicide. We can only realistically hope that politicians will take heed of our concern for the appalling loss of life happening in British towns and cities when enough people show solidarity with our cause. We will do this by building a grassroots movement that is big enough and strong enough to force cultural and social change.
We are already the biggest grassroots pro-life organisation in the UK, with a network of almost 60 official SPUC Branches and over 16,000 political campaigners across the length and breadth of the country. The variety of our work is unmatched in the pro-life sphere in the UK and we are engaged in everything from lobbying and political advocacy to shaping creative culture, informing the next generation in the classroom, caring for women in need and challenging unjust legislation in the courts.
But we need to do more. We do not need to convert everyone to our view – just enough to reach a critical mass where wholescale change is possible. Studies vary, but one says that when just 10% of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of society. Whatever the exact percentage is, we need to reach that tipping point where abortion becomes unthinkable – as the idea of enslaving fellow human beings is now.
To see the change we need to see, to reach that tipping point, we need to grow that network of support. We need more people acting as a pro-life voice in their communities; running our branches; engaging with MPs and elected politicians; responding to consultations; writing to the press; delivering leaflets; recruiting new members; donating; fundraising.
That is why we are launching our Join the Fightback campaign. Starting this weekend, parishes across the country will be handing out postcards inviting people to join us in fighting for a culture of life. Those who send the postcard back to us will receive an action pack, containing current campaigning materials and information on how to get involved across SPUC’s range of activities.

The pack is aimed at people who are keen to get more involved, so if you already regularly campaign with us, especially if you receive our mailings, this isn’t for you. However, you can help by…
Sharing the online form with others
If you know anyone who is looking for ways to get involved with pro-life work, please send them the link for them to order an action pack. Many people just need an invitation to get involved. Many people are interested, or even passionate about advocating for the unborn, but simply don’t know where to start – this could be the spark!
We would recommend sending an email along the lines of the draft text below. Feel free to edit it, add your friend’s email address, and send!
Dear
I just wanted to send you the link to order this pro-life action pack from SPUC:

In the space of one week in June 2025, MPs voted to allow women to abort their baby up to birth for any reason, and to legalise assisted suicide. Life is under attack at every stage.
We need to build a strong grassroots movement to change society to one that respects life at every stage. This pack gives you all the information you need to get involved in the pro-life movement.
Order postcards
You can also order the Join the Fightback postcards to distribute at churches or in your community. This is another way to extend the invitation to people to get involved in the pro-life movement.
Thank you for everything you do, and continue to do for the most vulnerable. THE FIGHTBACK STARTS NOW!
Yours in defence of life,
Michael Robinson
Executive Director
